관찰 대상에 관한 통계집단의 특성을 수량화하여 나타낸 것을 그 집 단의 특성치라고 하고, 집단의 특성을 기술하는데 합계, 평균, 분산, 비 율, 상관계수 등이 있으며 이러한 양들을 특성치라고 한다. 통계집단의 특성을 특성치로 나타내는 방법을 주로 다루는 학문을 기술통계학이라 한다. 어떤 TV공장에서 생산되는 브라운관의 평균수명을 검사하고자 할 때 TV공장에서 생산되는 브라운관중에서 몇 개를 선택하여 그 선택된 브 라운관의 수명시간을 조사함으로써 생산되는 모든 브라운관의 수명을 추측하는 방법을 생각할 수 있다. 이와 같이 추출된 자료로 구성된 표 본에 내포되어 있는 정보를 분석하여 모집단의 특성을 예측이나 추론을 하는 분야를 다루는 학문을 추측통계학이라 한다

통계자료를 얻는데 크게 나누어 두 가지가 있으며, 하나는 전수조사 이고, 다른 하나는 표본조사이다. 전수조사는 통계집단에 속하는 통계단 위를 빠짐없이 전부 조사하는 것이고, 표본조사는 그 일부만을 뽑아서 조사하는 것이다.
